MONITORING OF NOSOCOMIAL INFECTION

POLICY

For purposes of surveillance and simplicity of recording monitoring and intervention, the nosocomial infections are divided into

1. Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)

2. Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI)

3. Catheter Associated Urinary tract infection rate (CAUTI)

4. Surgical site infection rate (SSI)

Surveillance

This refers to the systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of data relating to nosocomial infections and prevailing trends of bacteria followed by dissemination of that information to those who can improve the outcome.  Targeted surveillance is the method utilized with emphasis on the Critical Care Units.

The surveillance data for nosocomial infection is presented as follows:

 

1.  Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)

         Number of VAP per month

                                                                   X   1000

    No. Ventilator days for the same month

 

   2.  Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI)

   Number of Central Line associated blood stream infections per month

                                                                                                               X 1000

   Number of central lines days in that month

 

    3.  Catheter Associated Urinary tract infection rate (CAUTI)

         Number of urinary catheter associated UTIs per month

                                                                                                              X 1000

         No. of urinary Catheter days in that month

 

    4.  Surgical site infection rate (SSI)                                 

         Number of Surgical Site Infections per month

                                                                              X 100

         No. of Surgeries performed in that month

 













































Infection Control Nurses and microbiologist perform surveillance and monitor trends in nosocomial infections.  Surveillance of inpatient nosocomial infections takes place daily.
