MONITORING OF
NOSOCOMIAL INFECTION
For purposes of surveillance and simplicity of recording monitoring and
intervention, the nosocomial infections are divided into
1. Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
2. Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI)
3. Catheter Associated Urinary tract infection rate (CAUTI)
4. Surgical site infection rate (SSI)
Surveillance
This refers to the systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of
data relating to nosocomial infections and prevailing trends of bacteria
followed by dissemination of that information to those who can improve the
outcome. Targeted surveillance is the
method utilized with emphasis on the Critical Care Units.
The surveillance data for nosocomial infection is presented as follows:
1. Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) Number of VAP per month
X 1000 No. Ventilator days for the same month 2.
Central Line Associated Blood
Stream Infection (CLABSI) Number of Central Line associated blood
stream infections per month X
1000 Number of central lines days in that month 3.
Catheter Associated Urinary tract infection rate (CAUTI) Number of urinary catheter associated
UTIs per month X 1000
No. of urinary Catheter days in that month 4. Surgical site infection rate (SSI) Number of Surgical Site Infections per
month X 100 No. of Surgeries performed in that month |
Infection Control Nurses and microbiologist perform surveillance and
monitor trends in nosocomial infections.
Surveillance of inpatient nosocomial infections takes place daily.
