High risk
medications are the one which have low therapeutic index. An error in
prescribing these medications may result in catastrophe. Examples are Anti-infectives, Potassium and Other Electrolytes, Insulin, Narcotics and Other Sedatives, Chemotherapeutic Agents, Heparin and Other Anticoagulants etc.

High risk
medications are prescribed in CAPITAL along with route, timing and specific
duration.

If it is a normal
medication, the administration is done by a single nurse after verification
of the name of the patient, the route, dosage and timing.

Expiry date is
checked prior to administration.

For high risk
medication buddy system is used that is one nurse announces and the other
nurse dispenses.
