Eye Hospital: Documented procedure (s) address care of patients arriving in the emergency including handling of medico-legal cases

 

a)     ................Hospital conducts a standardized initial assessment of patients in OPD.  In case of emergency patients the receptionist informs the available doctor about the arrival of emergency patient and carries out the instructions given by the doctor.

Patient’s identity and eye to be operated is confirmed from patient and Medical record.

Assessment shall include the following parameters:

·       Pulse, blood pressure and respiration.

·       Physical examination

Special needs of the vulnerable patients who are receiving treatment will be assessed.

All patients who come to the OPD as emergency shall be assessed and entered with Highlighter in Register.

The following parameters shall be assessed in detail:

·       Chief complaints

·       History of illness

·       Allergies or any associated disease

·       Physical examination of the eye

In case of mass casualties, triage shall be completed first, and then followed by assessment.

b)     The initial assessment is done by trained optometrists and subsequently by medical professionals having requisite qualifications in ophthalmology. Following is the matrix used

c)     The initial assessment for all the patients is entered in the case paper. Then a suitable action plan is worked out by the Ophthalmologists. The initial assessment for in patients is done & documented on the day of surgery.
