Safe Injection OR Infusion Practices

Safe Injection OR Infusion Practices

A safe injection is one that does not harm the recipient, does not expose the provider to any avoidable risks and does not result in waste that is dangerous for the community. Unsafe injection practices can lead to transmission of blood borne pathogens, with their associated burden of disease.

What is a safe injection

A safe injection, phlebotomy (drawing blood), lancet procedure or intravenous device insertion is one that:

 • does not harm the recipient;

• does not expose the provider to any avoidable risk;

• does not result in any waste that is dangerous for other people.

Safe practices in medical procedures:

• intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular needle injections;

• intravenous infusions and injections;

• dental injections;

• phlebotomy;

• lancet procedures.
